BROWSER TECHNOLOGY

USING HTML5 VIDEO & WEBGL SHADERS TO ENABLE LIVE STREAMING

Video has been around on the web for a while, but until recently your browser needed a little help. It needed to download extra software to show it to you. Now, modern browsers, like Chrome, can do this straight out the box.

The Teleporter experiment let's you use this video technology to transport yourself to another part of the planet.

This wouldn't have been possible without the help of another piece of technology called WebGL, a Web-based Graphics Library that is built into modern browsers and allows them to make use of the extra computing power within your graphics card.

With the help of WebGL, we distorted a flat piece of video using small programs called Shaders - really fast graphics processors that are more commonly used in video games. We then wrapped it onto a cylinder so that you can have the experience of exploring a panoramic 360º scene in real-time.
